Capacitance Level Measurement

Endress+Hauser’s capacitance level devices measure the change in capacitance between a probe and the tank wall (or between two probe electrodes) as product covers the sensor. The electronics convert dielectric change into continuous or point‑level signals. Form factors include rod, cable, and coaxial probes for liquids, slurries, and bulk solids.

They’re valued for robustness and simplicity: no moving parts. Measurement is largely independent of density and vapor, and handles viscous or adhesive media. Modern electronics provide coating compensation and teach‑in calibration, delivering stable readings with minimal maintenance and low cost.

To suit various plants, probes come with sanitary, corrosion‑resistant, high‑pressure builds; insulated variants suit conductive media, while bare probes serve non‑conductive products. Outputs such as 4–20 mA/HART, relay, or NAMUR ease DCS integration. Fast setup, diagnostics, and hazardous‑area approvals support safe operation.

Typical applications span overfill and dry‑run protection on tanks and pipes; continuous level in day tanks, totes, and mix vessels; and interface detection where permittivity contrasts. Media include oils and solvents, adhesives and resins, syrups and pastes, slurries and sludge, grains, pellets, cement, and other powders.
