Surge Arresters

Endress+Hauser Surge Arresters protect measuring points and control cabinets against transient overvoltages from lightning and switching operations. By safely diverting surges on power lines, 4–20 mA signal circuits, and fieldbus communications (HART, PROFIBUS PA, FOUNDATION Fieldbus) to ground via an impedance‑free path, they preserve device accuracy and availability. The range spans DIN‑rail and field‑mount variants for use across the process industries.

Individually, the HAW562 is a DIN‑rail surge protective device for control cabinets that safeguards power and communication lines; it offers optional Ex approvals and SIL2, is vibration/shock tested to EN 60068‑2 and supports direct and indirect shield grounding. HAW569 is a field‑mount surge arrester installed at the instrument to protect signal, communication, and—depending on variant—supply lines; it features optional Ex ia (signal/communication) or Ex d (simultaneous signal/communication/supply) and optional SIL2. Where available, HAW566 (DIN‑rail) and HAW568 (field‑mount) provide similar protection for 4–20 mA, fieldbus, and power lines and offer optional SIL3.

E+H surge arresters protect investment‑intensive transmitters, raise uptime, and reduce nuisance failures by matching protection to process electronics. The impedance‑free connection avoids voltage drops that could distort readings; Ex options allow use in hazardous areas, and device‑dependent SIL certifications support functional safety. Mechanical robustness, shield‑grounding concepts, and cabinet/field form factors simplify design and retrofit alike. As Fundamental Selection products, they carry an extended 5‑year warranty.

Typical applications include cabinet‑level protection for incoming/outgoing power and I/O, field‑level protection at transmitters on long cable runs, exposed tank farms and remote skids, and safeguarding HART/PA/FF segments against switching spikes. Surge arresters also complement building lightning systems by limiting residual currents from upstream protection and by protecting signal, communication, and power lines. Plants in water & wastewater, chemical, oil & gas/marine, and power & energy deploy HAW562 in cabinets and HAW569 at the device to keep measurements available.
